2,167 meters long in total, Old Caoling Tunnel used to connect Shichang and Fulong in the old days. At the upper part of its north entrance, there is an old board that says “in so writing, all danger shall be curbed,” suggesting that the area was highly risky in the past. At the tunnel’s south entrance, another board says, “this is where white clouds fly.” Despite it is old, the writing still feels wild and powerful.
Old Caoling Tunnel well represents the region’s cultural past and it is popular among tourists. A bicycle tour through the tunnel is highly recommended – it only takes 20 minutes for a single ride! When a train passes, one can hear the rumbling sounds of the train, and thus railway fans love coming here. The tunnel is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Its railway tracks and nostalgic oil lamps make visitors feel they are back to the past. The tunnel even crosses two counties at once – be sure to take a memorial photo with the signboard that strides across the two counties if you are here!
