Guishan Island has plenty of natural resources and historic sites worth a careful visit. There are Putuo Rock which worships Bodhisattva, a statue of Bodhisattva riding a dragon by a lake, hiking trails surrounding Guiwei Lake, Maoshi Hiking Trail, old Guishan Elementary School, and the famous “No Man Is an Island on this Lonesome Island” landmark. The old military tunnel here is not to be missed – it is ideal for taking a rest on a hot summer day, too, as temperature is lower inside. Visitors are also encouraged to head for Highland 401 via a scenic ecological hiking trail. To reach its top, one has to climb 1,700 stairs that last 1,300 meters – more than one hour in total. At the top, visitors can appreciate panoramic views of Guishan Island, as if looking at a turtle’s head and tail from its back. On a bright sunny day, even the Northeast Coast afar can be seen.
