A wealth of rain and a thick limestone layer make Su’ao a one-and-only town of cold springs in Southeast Asia. The crystal-clear water stays at about 21 Celsius degrees all year round. Colorless and odorless, it is suitable for bathing and drinking. The only spring in Taiwan that’s rich in calcium bicarbonate, Su’ao cold spring dates back to 1928. The Japanese army discovered it and studied it. Because the water tastes sweet and also rich in carbon dioxide, it was even used to make “yokan,” a Japanese dessert, and soda. Today, Su’ao no longer produces soda, but yokan remains its famous specialty. The town’s public spring house is equipped with men’s and women’s baths, as well as private baths. A well-designed park is nearby for visitors young and old to enjoy.
