The Sandiao Cape Lighthouse, situated on the eastern tip of Taiwan, is an important mark on the Pacific Ocean. Called the “Eye of Taiwan,” it was built in 1935 by the Japanese, with lights made of imported crystal glass. The lighthouse was damaged during WWII and was only refurbished by 1946. But some of the marks of war were retained to commemorate history, and today visitors can still easily find them. The lighthouse is 16.5 meters tall and projects white and red lights twice every 28 seconds at a range of 25 sea miles.

To visit the lighthouse, take the path near Magang and follow road signs. There is a historic object display and explanatory texts on the equipments and functions of the lighthouse. This is also the only lighthouse open to the public in northern Taiwan.
