A tour of whales and dolphins

Each year between April and October is the whale and dolphin watching period of Taiwan. The Kuroshio Current washes organic salts from the ocean bottom to the surface, forming a rich oceanic resource. This has made the Turtle Island area into one of Taiwan’s three largest fishing grounds, and a permanent passageway for whales and dolphins. Most commonly seen is the Long Snouted Spinner Dolphin in the spring and summer. In addition, seven more species commonly seen around the Turtle Island area are: the Pantropic Spotted Dolphin, Risso’s Dolphin, Pygmy Killer Whale, Bottle Nose Dolphin, Dwarf Sperm Whale, False Killer Whale and the Long Snouted Common Dolphin.
