The Lanyang Estuary, near Gongguan, Yilan, is jointly formed by Lanyang, Dongshan and Yilan Rivers. It is a popular spot among fishermen because they can catch young wild eel fish here. But birds love it even more because it has mud lands, grass ponds and sandbanks. In fact, the Lanyang Estuary has been an internationally renowned bird-watching spot for years. Not only is it the most important habitat for water birds. In an Asian wetland investigation report, the International Union for Conservation of Nature lists it as one of the 12 most important wetlands in Taiwan.

Every year, from October to April in the next year, people come here to watch the migratory birds spending the winter. The period between November and March is especially busy. You can find many people attentively observe wild birds with their family and friends through telescopes. Aside from watching birds, you can also immerse in the idyllic scenery of the Lanyang Plain and magnificent views of the ocean and the Gyushan Island. Finally, don’t forget to listen to the sounds of tapping waves.
