surfing guide
“This is captain speaking. We will soon arrive Taipei, Taiwan. The local time is 1 o’clock in the afternoon. The weather forecase at Taoyuan airport is clear sky and the ground temperature is 86 degree Fahrenheit...” After arriving Taoyuan airport, I easily found the bus to Taipei. Taipei is a modern city. The people in Taiwan are friendly. I can find 24-hour convenient stores everywhere here. The transportation in Taipei is also very convenient. You can take the MRT to every cornor of Taipei city. First I go to 101 tower – the second highest buiding in the world now. Then I go to Shilin night market. There are a variety of local snack, such as stinky tofu, hot stuffed dumpling, chinese sausage and bubble tea. I also find lots of inexpensive, but high-quality products, such as clothing, shoes, accessories and toys. The night life in Taipei is full of cheer and joy.

Fulong
photo1 The next day I take the train east-bound heading to Fulong. It takes around 1 hour from Taipei to Fulong by the rapidest train. Be sure that the train you take would stop at Fulong station. Even by the local train ( the slow one) it would only take 85 minutes. Today I would stay in a B&B - “Being outdoors” near Fulong train station. It is also the only surf shop in Fulong. You can rent a surfboard or have surfing lessons here. The rooms is clean ,not expensive and with toilet and shower. It would take 5-10 minutes to get to the beach from Fulong station. Walk straight and cross an intersection. Turn right while you see the YMCA and follow the trail for a few minutes to the surfing spot. The surfing spot at Fulong is outside left at the jetty near the Doshin Temple. If you don’t want to walk, you can also rent a bike.
The beach in Fulong stretches 3~4 kilometers long. The scenery is awosome with golden and fine sand, green mountain, the bule sea and the clear sky, especially at the golden senset. There is no reef in this beach and the water is warm. The main waves break next to the jetty. The wave is nice in spring and fall, around waist to 1 person high. In summer, the small and gentle wave is suitable and fun for the beginners. But if there is a typhoon coming between Taiwan and Japan, the wave would be powerful, one person high even much higher and excellently suitable for the experienced surfers. You can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and beautiful scenery here even just hanging on the beach.
photo2 If the wave is quite big, there would be currents and rips along the beach and the jetty. The currnets and rips are very strong. The locals would follow the currents to get to the lineup. But if you are a beginner and unfortunately trapped in the strong current, remember don’t be panic and don’t abandont your surfboard. Don’t paddle or swim directly against the currents and rips, but paddle sideway out of the currents and rips, or follow the current to the wave impace area, then the wave would take you back the inside area.photo3
The people in Fulong are friendly. The locals love and take the repect to their surfing environment. Please keep the beach clean and follow the LNT(leave no trash) rule.
If the sea is flat, you can do some other activities, such as hiking, biking, canoeing, rock climbing, visiting the temples and the senery of the Northeast coast. Sometimes there is a traditional Taoist ceremonies in front of the Donshin temple. Many tourism informaion could be obtained at the Fulong visitor center. There are some brochures about Caoling historical trail, bike trail and the map of fulong.
The ho-hai-yan Gungliau rock festival holds in Fulong beach in July every year since 2000. It is one of the biggest and the most important outdoor indie rock contest in Taiwan. Besides the indie rock contest, many famous singers and rock bands are also invited to perform in the rock festival. Three hundred thousand of visitors would come into this little town to join in the rock party in the 3 days. Sitting on the beach to enjoy the the rock music and the beautiful scene is wonderful and relaxing. If you want to stay in Fulong during the rock festival, you’d be better to book the room in April.
In Fulong, the famous food is “Fulong lunchbox” and the local seafood. Fulong lunchbox is cheap and taste good. If you want to eat seafood, there are 2 restaurants here. One is near the surfing spot and the other is on the main road, in opposit of the Fulong elementary school. You can taste the fresh local seafood, like local fishes, squid, seaweed and so on in the restaurants. There are some groceries, tea/coffee shops and a convenient store here.

Daxi Honeymoon bay
photo1 Honeymoon bay is one of the most famous surfing spots in Taiwan, It would take only 10 minutes from Fulong to Daxi by train. But there is only local train would stop at Daxi station. Be sure to check the local train schedule in order to waste time to wait for the train. Take the east-bound local train to Yiland or Hualien and get off at Daxi station. You can easily find the surfing shops when you arrive Daxi. There are 3 surfing shops at Daxi. All provide surfbaord renting, lessons and accommodation. Tonight I will stay at Spider surfing shop. Walking along the jetty behind the surfing shop for 5-10 minutes to reach the surfing spot of Daxi, honeymoon bay.
Honeymoon bay is sandy with rock. The beach is 500 meters long. The northern and southern sides of the beach are rocks. There is no reef in Honeymoon bay. The waves break at three points: left, middle and right. The waves are best in winter. The wave in winter here is fast and barrel. I heard the waves were very good before. The sand undersea has been lossing during these years by some unkown reasons, which makes the wave gets worst and unstable. But sometimes there are still some good waves days. You can see the turtle island while waiting for the takeoff or hanging on the beach. The senery is beautiful and rustic. But one thing has to be careful : there are lots of sharp gravels, broken glass and some deadly puffer fishes on the beach. If you walk barefooted on the beach, don’t get hurt by them.
photo2 There are 2 seafood restaurants and a Vietnamese restaurant near the Daxi staion. The Vietnamese restaurant is quite cheap and delicious. The seafood restaurants serves chinese cuisine made by local fresh seafood. There are another seafood restautant, a Family-mart and some little breakfast stores near Daxi habor. It would take a long walk to north from the Daxi station for about 10 minutes. Daxi is also famous in the fish market in the Daxi fishery harbor. Daxi fishery market is in the habor, in a street right next to the Family-mart in Daxi. Many fishing boats would return Daxi harbor in the afternoon. The fish auctions are hold in the market/harbor. You can buy some fresh fish to cook or eat some Taiwanese snacks, like oyster omlet, fried oyster cake and squid thick soup.
There are some B&B near Daxi fishery harbor. The surf shops also provide room for stay and only charged NTD 400 ~ 1000 per person. If there is no wave to surf. You can go hiking or visiting the Daxi fish market.

Wai’ao
photo1 From Daxi, I take the east-bound local train towards Ilan or Hualien and get off at Wai’ao station. Like Daxi, there is only local train would stop at Wai’ao station. Wai’ao is a very small town. Few people live here. To reach the surfing spot of Wai’ao , I walk north 500m from Wai’ao station. When you see two golden, giant lion statues on the side of the main road. Turn right and Wai’ao beach is over there. The beach of Wa’ao is 700-meter long with black, fine sand. The north and south ends of the beach are rock. In the south part of Wai’ao beach is rock undersea.photo2
In the meddle of it is sand. If you are a beginner, don’t surf at the southern part of Wai’ao beach. The rock would make you hard to walk back to shore. Be careful to a big undersea rock with a buoy ball in the middle of the surfing spot and some fishing net in the sea when you surf here. The wave condition of Wai’ao is powerful, fast and barrel in winter and during typhoons. The wave is small or even flat in summer. The wave in spring and fall is consistant and around waist ~ one person high. There are less people surf here than Wushi harbor and Honeymoon bay. The people are friendly here. There is 2 surfing shops in Wai’ao. Both of them provide surfboard renting ,lessons. But only one of them have rooms to rent for visitors.
There is only one noodle stand. I would recommend to bring food by yourself. If the sea is too flat to surf, the only thing you can do here is sunbath or swimming.

Wushi harbor
Photo1 Wushi harbor is the last stop of my surfing trip. is between Wai’ao and Toucheng station. You can walk for 30 minutes from Wa’ao or Toucheng station. If you start at Wai’ao station, walk south and turn left at a temple gate on the opposite side of the main road. Walk until you see the entrance of the Wushi beach. If you get off at the Toucheng station, you can walk north to the temple gate and turn right to get to the beach or take a taxi from Toucheng station to the Wushi beach. There are many surf shops near the surf spot of Wushi harbor. Today I will stay in “Surfer Inn”. Sufer Inn also provides surfboard renting, surf lessons and accommodation. It would cost NTD $400 per person. The beach is located by the jetty of Wushi harbor. The beach of Wushi harbor is similar to that of Waiao, but this beach is larger. It would take a pretty long walk from the beach entrances to the sea. The sand is black and fine. There is no reef here. The senery is beautiful with turtle island.
Photo2 There would be a strong currents and rips during typhoons and in winter. A buoy-ball line set close to the jetty is to keep surfing poeple away from the huge boulders beside the jetty. The wave size of Wushi harbor is different in summer and winter. The wave in summer is small even flat, but it is consistantly quite good in spring and fall. In winter, the wave is usually choppy and huge. There are several points that wave breaks along the beach, the main one is next to the jetty. You can find good waves from right to left of the beach.
Photo3 The people at Wushi harbor is friendly. The scenery is good and the water is warm. I can see the turtle island at the beach. In summer, the beach is extremely crowded, especially in summer weekend. Many poeple from Taipei would come here to surf or just to lie on the beach to relax. Lots of people would get into the water in the very early morning to surf the first wave of the day. Be careful not to be hit by someone else’s board when the beach is crowded. If you are a beginner, don’t surf near the jetty on the big wave day in avoiding be trapped by the currents and rips or thrashed in the huge boulders beside the jetty.
There are few food and beverage vendors near Wushi beach in summer. The other choice is going to Toucheng and there are many options of restaurants. You can find showers in the coastal road of Wushin beach. There are several B&B near Wu-shi harbor. Some are close to the beach and some are beside the main road. Many surf shops also have rooms to rent. The prices of room would differ.
  Tips:
During the peak season, there would be more than 500 persons surfing in weekend, and 80-100 in weekdays.
During the off season, there would be 60-80 people surfing in weekend, and 20 in weekdays.

Reminder
After the surfing trip in norheastearn Taiwan. I have a lot of fun to have many good rides and enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery, fresh air and a relaxing atmosphere with the friendly local people. The wave condition in Taiwan is mainly affected by the weather system around Taiwan. If there is a low pressure system or typhoon between Taiwan and Japan, The wave of northeastern Taiwan would be very good. If the north east wind comes down in winter, the waves of Honeymoon bay and Wai’ao would be better because of the offshore winds. The surfing spots are very close to each other and the transportation is convenient. If you are not satisfied with the wave of one surfing spot, you may go to some other spot to check the conditions. If there is no suitable wave, maybe you could have another plan about hiking or sightseeing. Please keep the surfing etiquette when you surf. Most local people are friendly and helpful as long as you show them respect. If you are a beginner, please ask the locals the condition of currents and rips. The currents and rips are very strong when the wave is large. If you are trapped in the currents, don’t be panic and don’t paddle directly against the currents. Paddle sideway out of the currents. It is important to remind that surfing is prohibited when the typhoon warning released by the government. One who violates the regulations would be fined heavily.
